Parodius - Non-Sense Fantasy [SNES]
This is a classic!
The SNES version seems OK, but I don't see too many differences compared to the PC-Engine version

A few more things for my previous comment. Network between two computers was science fiction back in a day 1989 (even if you are in the same room - just use diskets). RUclips was released 16 years later and WWW 4 years later. "Check it online" did not exist. Bloody Afternoon was really early game in Amiga timeline. The pinnacle of Amiga games was finnish relerelease of Stardust in 1992 by Bloodhouse (now Housemargue). Lead developer was Harri Tikkanen.

This RUclips post is really old. It was not the best game in the world , but we did with my frend when we where underage. However, It was proper release and you could buy it from store in retail box (it was a budget game). Realities where a little different: 512 kb of memory (code, graphics, music++ and everything else), no hardrive (only diskets, because of cost). There was no game engine (like Unreal & Unity), so you start with blank project and you code your engine. 35 years a go commercial games releasis where extremely rare (probably about 2 a year in Finland). Now we have a lot of strong gaming companies in Finland like Remedy (Alan Wake, Control, Max Payne etc). Supercell (Class of clans, Boom beach etc) and many other games like Angry Birs, Cities:Skyline, Trials, Returnal etc. Now we thousends of games released every day without any meaning or impact. Graphic designer for Bloody Afternoon is currently working in game startup creating Pax Dei (previously hi worked for Remedy). I am still in software development business, but not in gaming (www.linkedin.com/in/tuukka-salonen-59396938/). One more more thing: games used to be much harder back in the day. The reason was simple: there was no memory for a long game. So, you have to make it harder. Deal with that ;)

I like to rank my collection in 2024 on criteria like: quality of BASIC, repairability and availability of replacement parts, room for expansions inside and ease of designing new hardware, proper RGB output with 40/80 characters, flexibility of hardware for new machine code, standards compliant ports, cabinet looks, ease of connecting a floppy drive and the speed of it, quality built in power supply, keyboard layout and feel. The ranking gets very different than 1985 sales figures! Favourite machines are P2000T, CPC 464, MSX2, Olivetti M10. The bottom of the ranking is filled with famous machines like the Apple II, Atari XL, Spectrum 48k, and at the bottom the C64.

Atari 8 bit version is nicest this time. Tape load times were a pain, thankfully turbo upgrades remedy that problem. I built a speed pot into my xc12 years back to speed tape up, decreased loading times but too much speed caused errors. The Atari 8 bits soundchip blows the ST one away which is odd. The Amiga was supreme for audio, also designed by Jay Miner. C64 version 2nd place. Always a close call between 8 bit atari and c64 so trying to say one is better than other is fruitless.

The ST struggled without hardware scrolling and sprites compared to the Amiga, even the Commodore 64 version looked more playable, blockier obviously, but at least it was smooth with it's hardware.

I just knew this one from reviews in two German magazines. The C64 version was tested in the one magazine and was rated as very good while in the other magazine only the 16bit versions were testet and only got 33% of 100%. Looking at the really fast paced C64 version it somewhat reminds me of Tennis on the Gameboy. For a very cheap budget game (on the C64 it was very cheap) it looks like it could be a fun game if one managed how to master it. Otherwise this game seems to be very frustrating. Spectrum version looks like a totally different game and programmed by completely different developers.

The ST and Amiga versions were horrible. There was a trend, back then, to put out old 8-bit favourites with a shiny new 16-bit coat of paint, and (iirc) they were all disasters, "upgrading" the 8-bit graphics for more detailed and colourful 16-bit graphics that had none of the charm, were fugly as hell, and actually hurt the playability by wrecking the visual clarity, i.e. the player's ability to "read the screen" at a glance. Devs have clearly learned nothing from those mistakes, which is in the 2020s we're still getting "evolved" versions of classic arcade games where the devs think adding "enhanced" graphics (giant explosions, light bloom, screen-shake, etc.) will improve the game somehow. No, you mad fools, it'll just wreck your ability to see what's going on. We've known this since the late 1980s...

There is only 1 game that matters, Rick Dangerous II, and it destroys any other 8-bit machine if you have it on the CPC 464. I also like the extended life of the CPC today, as people found ways to do smooth scrolling, user overscan for rediculous tall shmups and use the easily expanded RAM tot 512kB.
